ABOUT THE PRINTS

Named for a beloved Lowcountry luminary, the Queenie Topiary print features gorgeous blooms that spring to life with every step.Queenie Topiary Embroidery: Named for a beloved Lowcountry luminary, the Queenie Topiary print features gorgeous blooms that spring to life with every step. Inspired by the community matriarch’s generous warmth and care, the pattern’s vivid botanical embroidery and harmonious hues evokes a sweet garden rooted in compassion.

"Miss Queenie Jenkins, better known to some as 'Mama Queenie,' made a lasting impact on everyone she met, especially the local kids she lovingly referred to as her children. She spoke with a Gullah accent, a culture sacred to the Lowcountry. Queenie always took care of everyone. She had twelve children of her own but took others under her wing from her time working as a midwife and in the school system ad was known to pass out biscuits from her apron in the school halls between classes. Queenie Jenkins was adored even more than the amount of love she put into her community."

"Decades ago, if you walked down Calhoun Street in Bluffton, you might hear a delightful tune seemingly coming from the woods. The mysterious melodies were coming from Luke Peeples’s cottage. A pianist known to be a kind, gentle soul, wrote Bluffton High School’s processional in 1936 and the outstanding Bluffton local was quoted to say, “if your feet can’t take you, I ain’t gonna go,” something we understand– Bluffton is all the paradise we need."

ABOUT SPARTINA 449

Spartina 449 logo
On Lowcountry living:

"Inspired by the unspoiled, natural treasures of Daufuskie Island, founder Kay Stanley had an idea that led her to create her specialty lifestyle brand in 2009. Spartina 449, named after the lush grass along the South Carolina coast and Kay’s island cottage lot number, consists of beautiful patterns and shapes in apparel, handbags, and jewelry, all inspired by the Lowcountry’s salt marshes and sandy beaches."

On taking an eco-conscious approach to their 'laid-back luxe' line:

"Living within our lush Lowcountry terrain, we believe in honoring natural fibers. You’ll see this in our signature linen harvested from Belgium fields and the silk, linen, cotton, and cashmere selected for our newest apparel pieces.

With each new collection, we continuously strive to find better, more responsible manufacturing advancements that protect natural resources. You will notice that we use very little synthetic fibers in our apparel, mainly because they are non-biodegradable and give rise to waste. With quality materials and attention to workmanship, our goal is to design longer lasting clothing to reduce the overall amount of excess apparel."

On giving back:

"Since 2009, Spartina 449 has been a charitable supporter of the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to education, scientific discovery and charity for the purpose of preserving the cultural heritage of Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. The foundation has achieved numerous accomplishments, including the establishment of the Billie Burn Museum, the Gullah Learning Center, and most recently, the restoration of the famed "Midwife's Carriage", owned and operated by Island notable, Sarah Grant, from 1932 until 1969, whereby she assisted in the delivery of over 130 babies on Daufuskie."
